Production Stories: Wellcome Collection

Studio Naama commissioned us to create a wool and plastic patchwork curtain for 'Finger Talk', a new British Sign Language (BSL) artwork by Cathy Mager that invites visitors to step out of a hearing-centred world and into a space shaped by deaf perspectives. On show at the Wellcome Collection from 1st July - 17th October 2025.

The finished curtain measured 3.5 x 6m and was made from 18 metres of wool and two metres of 5mm plastic to create the window through which a video installation can be viewed.

The curtain was finished with a chain in the hem to help the visually impaired navigate their way around the soft surface.

Georgia & Matilda constructed this project in the studio over two days, where the temperature peaked at 29 degrees. It was constructed with flat-felled seams and a contrasting yellow stitch. The flat-felled seams ensured the curtain is completely double-sided, as it hangs in the centre of the exhibition and forms an important sound and visual barrier in the space.

See below for a slideshow of the production process (not including the very hot humans wrestling the fabric through the machine!) and a couple of snaps from the install day.

You can see the completed project on our projects page here.
