Production Stories: Patch Gloucester

Patchwork Curtains for The Forum

Some projects come together quickly, while others take time to evolve. This project was very much the latter, unfolding between March 2025 and February 2026, with a short pause in the middle while my new boss baby made their safe arrival into the world.

I was delighted to once again be commissioned by Patch to design and make curtains for their latest co-working space in Gloucester, located within The Forum. From the outset, the aim was to create something playful and vibrant for the lounge space, while keeping the office areas calmer and more understated.

The design process went through many iterations. Early concepts explored an all-over patchwork curtain, echoing the graphic grid structure that defines the architecture of The Forum. As the design developed, we refined the idea, gradually reducing the patchwork so that it sits as a bold central panel within the curtains. This approach not only maintained the strong graphic reference to the building’s structure but also provided a more cost-effective solution, creating a striking visual backdrop for events held in the lounge.

The patchwork panels were carefully made in the studio. In total, 78 individual pieces were cut and assembled to form the two panels, each measuring an impressive 7.5 metres by 1 metre. Seeing the individual pieces come together into the final composition was a satisfying moment in the making process.

The finished curtains themselves are equally impressive in scale. With a drop of 4.8 metres, they required a significant amount of fabric and patience to guide through the sewing machine while completing the final flat-felled seams.

The result is a vibrant pair of patchwork curtains that bring colour, texture and energy to the lounge space, paired with subtler patchwork curtains in the office areas that quietly reference the same design language.

Some images of the patchwork construction in the studio, we cut 78 individual panels which were then flat felled together to create two 7.5m wide panels.

The lounge curtains on install day, the central panels are aligned and were designed to run seamlessly into each other to give the appearance of a single curtain.
